U. S. News & Report, January, 2010, lists Southwestern High School as one of the top high schools in the Nation!
Southwestern High School has also ranked in the top high schools in Kentucky on state mandated assessments for 2008 and 2009!
Southwestern High School has become the largest school in Pulaski County, serving over 1300 students in grades 9 through 12. Since opening in the fall of 1993, SWHS faculty and staff have striven to provide a challenging, supportive and safe atmosphere in which all students can reach their potential and become contributing members of society.
Southwestern High School is committed to excellence through ongoing assessments and revisions and provides the expectations and opportunities for all students to develop socially, emotionally, intellectually, physically and artistically. SWHS has shown steady progress toward all state and national educational goals and is proud to be known as a successful school.
SWHS provides the academic structure for students to select one of three diploma programs to meet their individual graduation plan and career goals. Southwestern is known for ranking above the state average in the number of students that earn the prestigious Commonwealth Diploma. With over 65% of our graduates going on to post secondary education, a large percentage of our students complete the pre-college curriculum. Utilizing a block schedule format and well qualified teachers, SWHS students have a wide variety of course offerings to meet their individual needs and interests.
SWHS offers a variety of co-curricular clubs and activities. All students are encouraged to participate in some type of extra-curricular program or athletic program that is of interest to them. Our experience has been that students involved in activities beyond the typical school day tend to be more motivated toward success in the classroom. SWHS has achieved notoriety through clubs and programs such as the Raptor Program and Conservation Club and has been designated as having the largest DECA Chapter in the state. Other opportunities include Spanish Honor Society, FCA, FFA, FCCLA, Key Club, STLP and numerous ROTC related teams and programs.
Graduates from each SWHS class typically are awarded over one million dollars in scholarships for post-secondary education opportunities. SWHS counselors work hard with the students to help maximize their chances at scholarship awards. Students that qualify for the Governor's Scholar Program and the National Merit Scholarship Program especially benefit from scholarship opportunities. All students are strongly encouraged to do their best in the classroom and to contribute to the well being of their community through volunteer programs and service organizations.
Southwestern High School is proud to be a part of the Pulaski County Educational System and an integral part of the surrounding community. Please feel welcome to join us as we prepare our students to be the community leaders of tomorrow.
